Turning words into swords and swords into ploughshares

The Date - Script (2020)

INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Max and Jenny sit at a candle lit table.

MAX
So.

JENNY
So.

MAX
Are you gonna talk to me or just sit there scowling?

JENNY
I think we’ve said all there is to say!

MAX
C’mon, don’t be like that. So I think paying off the mortgage before having kids is the best idea. What’s so wrong with that?

JENNY
That’s easy for you to say, you’re a male.

MAX
What’s that supposed to mean? Besides, what’s the rush?

JENNY
I don’t want to be one of those old mothers. I’m running out of time!

MAX
Don’t be silly, you’re still young... and beautiful.

Max leans across the table and takes Jenny’s hand but she pulls it away.

MAX (CONT'D)
Can’t we just have a nice night without all this baby talk?

JENNY
I can’t believe you. My mother was right.

MAX
Oh yeah, what did she say?

JENNY
That women can’t rely on men, we can only count on ourselves.

MAX
That’s bullshit and you know it!

JENNY
Do I? Because so far you haven’t shown me any reason to believe
otherwise.

MAX
That’s not fair.

JENNY
What you’re saying isn’t fair. Do you think this is easy for me? I’m
pouring my heart out to you, telling you what I want in life and
you’re looking at me like I’m crazy!

MAX
You are being a little crazy.

Jenny gives Max a death stare that could freeze over Antarctica.

MAX (CONT'D)
How about this, we wait... a year. If everything is going well and we
are in a good financial position, we can talk about it again then.

JENNY
No. I think you should leave now.

MAX
But I haven’t finished my drink.

JENNY
I think you’ve drunk enough!

MAX
Is that a stab at how much I drink?

JENNY
(with venom)
I don’t know, should it be?

MAX
I don’t have a drinking problem. Big deal if I enjoy a cold beer at
the end of a long day, I work hard, I deserve it.

JENNY
Maybe if you didn’t drink so much there would be more money for a baby.

MAX
Oh here we go again.

JENNY
Seriously I think you should leave, right now, before one of us says
something we regret!

MAX
Oh don’t worry, I’m already regretting.

JENNY
You and me both!

A loud DING is heard.

Max stands.

MAX
I’d say it was nice to meet you but I think we both know that’d be a
lie.

JENNY
Have a nice life! Buh-bye!

Jenny turns her nose and waves her hand in dismissal.

Max leaves.

Moments later another man, Harry, sits.

HARRY
Hi, I’m Harry.

JENNY
(big smile)
Hi Harry, Jenny.

They shake hands.

HARRY
So do you do speed dating much?

JENNY
No, first time.

HARRY
Cool, me too. So what should we talk about?

JENNY
Well... what are your thoughts on having kids before buying a house?
