Dreamer Am I - Poem (2000)

Dreamer am I
Swept off into a world of pure bliss
A paradise forever undiscovered
Because every second glance
Turns old things into new
Dreamer am I
Seeing visions of pure love
In a celebration of pastel perfection
Fairies dance the tango
Dreamer am I
What we can one day shake hands
A bridge between colours and cultures
Music spreads through me
Freedom swirls around me
Clouds wander over me
And the stars never need polishing
Dreamer am I
Perched on my shoulder is Peaceful Simplicity
“It’s so nice to meet you!”
She helps me forget about the
Should-Have-Beens, Would-Have-Beens
Could-Have-Beens
The ones that drift by
In the zephyr of tomorrows
Dreamer are we
Who look at the sky
And watch it hug eternity
Endless in its boundaries
Dreamer are we
When we reach out a hand
To help the fallen in their climb up to heaven
Where angels bless first kisses
With dew tipped roses
Dreamer are we
That swim in the ocean of harmony
Listening to the soft jingle
Coming from the waves

But
Dreamer are those
Feeding the poor
Raising money for the hungry
Pricked by the thorns
On the uncomfortable silences
Dreamer are those
Scorched by the burning summers
Heartless enough to dry already empty tears
Dreamer are those
Who take away a King’s throne
Placing it behind the Servant
Who howls at the dull moon
With taloned hands reaching for him
“They cannot find me here.”
Dreamer are we
Building roads to link countries
Then cough as the dust settles
Revealing just rubble
Dreamer are they
Marching in protest
Against captured hearts
Diseases of human behaviour
Dreamer are they
Who say:
“What’s mine is yours,
What’s yours is yours.”
Who die so that others may have life
Dreamer am I
Swimming against the tsunami
Of politics and social status
Dreamer are those
Who put in their all
Only to receive
Nothing in return
Not even a smile or warm embrace
Dreamer are we
That truly believe
The world can get much worse
That honestly think
Standing together as one
Our voices can shake
Can stir
A volcanic eruption of values and morals

And
Dreamer are we
That search for the white noise
Dreamer are they
Leaving footprints in the sand
For someone else to follow
Dreamer are those
Who fight so there are no wars
Dreamer are you
Searching for a soul
Behind lost eyes
Dreamer are they
Trying to stand on shaking ground
Knowing they will fall
But falling only means
They can try once again

So
Dreamer am I
To believe in the power of laughter
Dreamer am I
Who believes in solar energy
Dreamer am I
To think the universe is a fraction
Of what is really out there
Dreamer am I
To believe that there are two meanings
OF the word HERO
Heroes can be people
Who go to war and save countries
But heroes can be those
Who touch other peoples lives
Dreamer am I
Convinced that everyone is a hero
To someone else
Dreamer am I
Putting faith in others
I see through the blind
I hear through the deaf
I speak through the mute
Dreamer who wakes
But doesn’t like what she sees
So she goes back to sleep
Dreamer am I
Who wakes
Then sleeps and dreams
Of no one being alone
Dreamer am I to believe in second chances
Dreamer am I
And I am the Dreamer.
